Wadi Araba Jordan

Between the Dead Sea and the Gulf Aqaba the 166 km long Wadi Araba is located. It is a part of the Jordan Rift Valley and of the border between Jordan and Israel, like it was already the border between the kingdoms of Judah, today's Israel, and Edom, today's Jordan. This remote landscape is ideal for hiking and Jeep safaris and houses archaeological treasures.

According to researches the Wadi Araba shows human occupation since thousand of years. Particularly Wadi Feynan, close to Dana Nature Reserve, has been excavated. This area is extraordinary due to copper mining. It was the first place in the world where copper ore was extracted and smelted for human use. During the Bronze Age, mining and smelting techniques became more advanced. Under the control of the Edomite Kings, Feynan's copper wealth supplied the Assyrian Empire. Copper mining reached it peak in Roman times by the use of new technologies. The most obvious relict of the copper age is Khirbet Feynan, a Byzantine settlement with three churches, indicating the size and importance of the community. In Wadi Araba had been the largest copper production centre of the southern Levant.

In this remote and ancient landscape it is possible to spend the nights in a camp or the more luxurious alternative is the Eco Lodge, constructed by the the Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature as part of Jordan's eco tourism. The Wadi Araba offers great sceneries with large sand dune mountains, in some places dense vegetation like acacia trees, gravel outwash plains and mudflats, here and there some Bedouin settlements and grazing camels.
